The Under-₹500 Case Buying Guide: What You Get at Every Price in India
Indian accessory counters stack cases from ₹100 to ₹3,000 for the same phone. Beyond a point you are paying for branding and prints; below a point you are paying for nothing useful. Here is what genuinely changes as the price climbs, so your ₹500 goes to the right place.
₹80–150: the printed shell
Thin PC or soft TPU with a print. Protects against scratches and light knocks; corners are usually uniform and thin. Fine as a scratch cover for a careful desk user. Check that the cutouts match your exact model — at this price, moulds are often shared loosely between siblings.
₹200–350: where protection begins
Proper TPU with at least some corner thickening, a front lip that actually hovers over the screen, and better button covers. This bracket is the value sweet spot for most users. Squeeze the corners and lay the phone face-down: the screen should not touch the counter.
₹400–700: structure arrives
Two-layer designs (soft TPU shell + hard back plate), deeper airbags, matte anti-yellow coatings on clear cases. If you drop your phone weekly or ride two-wheelers often, this bracket earns its price.
What never changes with price
Fit. A ₹1,500 case made for the wrong variant protects worse than a ₹250 case made for your exact model. The two checks that matter at every price: exact model number match (see find your exact model) and the face-down hover test.
Where budget buys are a mistake
Clear cases under ₹150 yellow within months (why clear cases yellow), and "glass back" budget cases crack on the first drop while looking premium in the tray. Budget is fine for TPU; be suspicious of budget glamour.
Where paying more is waste
Prints and "glass back" finishes add price without protection. A ₹1,200 shiny case often protects less than a ₹300 honest TPU because the hard glossy shell is stiff and slippery. Pay for structure (corners, lips, two-layer build), not for mirror finishes.
Red flags at the counter
- Packet lists three or more model names for one mould.
- Camera window clearly offset when you dry-fit on the display unit.
- No front lip at all — lay it face-down and the screen kisses the counter.
- Strong chemical smell that does not air out in a day — cheap plasticisers, and they yellow fast.
Price brackets guide you, but the two physical checks — exact-model fit and the face-down hover test — are the real purchase decision at any price.
