How to Clean a Phone Case (and Whether Yellowed TPU Can Be Saved)
A case collects everything your pocket carries: lint, oil, dye from jeans, and a slow tan from sunlight. Cleaning is simple โ the mistakes come from using the wrong chemicals and from expecting yellowed TPU to become clear again. Both, honestly handled, below.
The weekly routine (all materials)
Take the case off. Wash with dish soap and lukewarm water using a soft brush โ dish soap cuts skin oil, which is most of the grime. Dry fully before refitting; trapped moisture between case and phone scratches backs over time and corrodes speaker mesh.
Stubborn marks
- Dye transfer from jeans: baking soda paste, gentle circular brush. Works partially on TPU, better on silicone.
- Sticky residue: a drop of isopropyl alcohol on a cloth, spot only. Do not soak printed cases โ prints fade.
- Lint in ports and lips: dry soft brush or Blu-tack; never metal picks near the case's button membranes.
What never to use
Bleach and acetone. Bleach makes TPU brittle and yellows it faster later; acetone crazes polycarbonate and erases matte coatings. Hot water warps thin shells.
Can yellowing be reversed?
Partially, temporarily. UV yellowing is chemical change inside the material, not dirt on it โ peroxide baths and sunlight tricks lift a shade or two for weeks, then it returns. The honest fix is replacement, or buying anti-yellow coated clear cases and accepting a slower tan. The chemistry is in why clear cases yellow.
Hygiene note
Phone cases routinely carry more bacteria than most household surfaces because they travel from hands to tables to pockets all day. A weekly soap wash is less about looks and more about the fact that the case touches your face-adjacent hands hundreds of times a day.
Clean the phone before refitting
While the case is off, wipe the phone's back and frame with a dry microfibre; grit trapped between case and phone is what polishes fine scratches into the frame over months. Check the speaker and port openings for lint and brush them dry. Two minutes every week keeps both surfaces new.
When to retire a case
Retire a case when corners have compressed visibly (they have already absorbed their drops), when clear TPU yellows past your tolerance, or when the lip has worn low enough that the screen touches on face-down lay. A case is consumable protection; its job is to age so the phone does not have to. And when replacing, verify the new one against your exact model on FitMyCase.
